Wilfred Ruprecht Bion (Muttra, India 1897 - Oxford, UK
1979) giunse tardi alla psicoanalisi come professione. Dopo una breve parte
dell'infanzia passata in India, paese di cui ebbe poi sempre nostalgia, approdò
in Inghilterrra all'età di otto anni per andare in collegio. Finita la scuola
superiore, si arruolò come allievo uffciale carrista e combatté nelle Fiandre
durante l'ultimo anno della Grande Guerra e fu decorato al valore militare.
Dopo la guerra, si laureò in storia all'Università di Oxford, insegnò per un
breve periodo, poi intraprese studi di medicina all'Università di Londra.
Conseguito l'esame di stato, iniziò ad interessarsi di psicoterapia e
frequentò la Tavistock Clinic fin dal 1932. Intraprese un'analisi con John
Rickman nel 1938, che fu interrotta dallo scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale
e poi definitivamente abbandonata in seguito al fatto che Bion e Rickman, in
quanto psichiatri militari, si trovarono a lavorare insieme all'ospedale
militare di Northfield, luogo in cui Bion cominciò a sviluppare la
teorizzazione sui gruppi, che avrebbe trovato una formulazione definitiva in
"Esperienze sui gruppi". Anche se dopo gli anni cinquanta
Bion non lavorò più con gruppi terapeutici, la sua percezione del singolo come
fermamente radicato nel gruppo permea tutto il suo lavoro di psicoanalista.
Intraprese un'analisi con Melanie Klein nel 1945 e divenne rapidamente una
figura di spicco nella Società Psicoanalitica Britannica (Direttore della
Clinica Psicoanalitica londinese dal 1956 al 1962 e Presidente della Società
dal 1962 al 1965). Si trasferì a Los Angeles nel 1968 e tornò in Inghilterra
pochi mesi prima di morire nel novembre del 1979.
